Cardiology Workshop in Canine & Feline Electrocardiography
Time: 08:30 - 12:30
Registration Fee: € 350,-  Zur Anmeldung
Location: University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna
Speakers: Sabine Riesen, John Bonagura
Recognition: Austrian Veterinary Chamber: 4 Education points
Goals: This workshop considers: 1) Technical aspects of recording the electrocardiogram (EKG, ECG) using standard equipment and the newer hand-held devices; 2) Interactive interpretation of canine and feline electrocardiograms within a clinical context; and 3) Therapeutic and management approaches for heart rhythm disturbances in small animal practice.

Description: The workshop begins with a short review of clinically-relevant electrocardiographic theory and the normal EKG waveforms in dogs and cats. An approach to EKG analysis is then presented. Following this is a practical demonstration of recording techniques using conventional electrocardiographic equipment, a commonly used European ECG telemetry recording device, and one of the popular hand-held devices designed for the mobile telephone. The majority of the workshop involves electrocardiographic interpretation using case vignettes and ECG unknowns. The participants will be divided into small “working groups” to analyze a set of EKGs that will be reviewed with the instructors. Both common and challenging rhythm diagnoses will be considered along with management approaches. Participants will receive a workbook with electrocardiograms as well as reference notes for future use.

Cardiac Ultrasound Interpretation Workshop

Goals: This type of Echo workshop is focused mostly to practitioners who are already performing echocardiography and want guidance in image interpretation.

Description: The workshop begins with a review of the echocardiographic examination including a short instructor demonstration of 2D, M-mode and Doppler examinations. The majority of the workshop involves echocardiographic interpretation using case vignettes. The participants will be divided into small “working groups” and analyze echocardiographic images (videos and static images). These cases studies will later be reviewed with an opportunity for case discussion among the participants and instructors. Both common and challenging echocardiographic diagnoses will be considered during the workshop.
